Read the Rulebook
You may think that the game is quite straightforward and try to jump straight into it. While you could probably figure out more or less what you need to do this way, the rulebook is a far more efficient method.
Without the rulebook, you could still play well, but you might not be able to win as easily as you can with it. At the end of the day, the rules are there for you to better your skills.
Get Rid of Low Numbers
Aces, 2s, 3,s and so on can be placed in the top left. (You need the ace of a suit before placing any others) These low numbers serve no strategic purpose when they’re left on the main board. Anytime you have the opportunity to remove them from it; you should do so.
Do be aware that once you’ve removed them from the board in this way, you can’t put them back. This shouldn’t be a problem as any number that could have been removed by them will also be a low number that you should get rid of. The less number of small cards left on the board will allow you to open up more space to free the hidden cards and stack your high ranking cards.
Learn the Logical Sequences
There are three steps to the logical sequence of classic solitaire. First, you place cards in the top left, whenever you are able. Second, you try to move cards around on the main board in order to free up more space and unlock the hidden cards. Third, you look through the deck for more cards to put on the top left and main board. (Still focusing on the top left before the main board, of course)
Following this order is imperative to winning. If you took cards out of the deck when there were still options to be made on the board, you will block those cards with the new ones and have even more cards to deal with on the main board. The more cards blocking up the main board, the more difficult it will be to unlock the hidden cards and free up new spaces.

Be Strategic with Your Kings
When there is an empty space on your main board, you can put a king there to start another card grouping. While doing so helps you free up the space where the king used to be, it isn’t always a good idea to move a king to the free space.
For example, if a king turns up in your deck and you have only one free space left, you may not want to put it there and block up the only space you had left. If you do so and then a king of the opposite color turns up in the main board, not only can you not move that king, but any cards that could have been placed on it will now continue to block up the board.
Generally, you should always leave one free column on the main board for the sake of emergencies. Try and only place a king that is already on the main board and only when there are two spaces left.
The only reason you would block up the last column you have open with a king is if you can see that you have the correct colored cards to build off of it. If you have a black king, a red queen, a black jack, and a red 10, then moving the king is definitely in your best interest. When you move all four of those cards, you’re unlocking four of your other columns to bring out new combinations of cards.
In short, try to keep one column free when possible and only move a king to a new column if you have two or three other cards on the main board to place with him.
Focus on the Means to Victory
Remember that the aim of the game is to get all of your cards to the top left of the game. Your goal is not to get all the cards from your deck onto the main board. (Although doing so is necessary to get them to the top left and win)
The basic means of getting all of your cards to the top left is by getting the lower rank cards out of the way quickly and revealing all of the hidden cards on the main board. Most of the time, once you’ve revealed every card on the main board, getting them to the top left doesn’t take much longer.
As you do reveal these cards, just be sure that any move you make doesn’t lock a low-level card behind a high level one. For example, if your queen is blocking a 2 or 3, don’t put a jack on the queen. Leave the queen be and wait for the correct king to get her out of the way.
